San Francisco boasts some of the most beautiful natural vistas in the world – the view over the Bay being one of them. There is a place in the Bay Area which allows both locals and visitors an unrivaled view of the natural assets that make San Francisco such a fantastic place to live and visit. This is in Berkeley at the Berkeley Marina. The Marina (and the adjacent wetland habitat and wildlife sanctuary) acts as the western bookend to the city. At the eastern end is Tilden Regional Park.
The Berkeley Marina is one of the most popular places for those who call San Francisco home to relax and throw off the stresses of big city living. It is the ideal destination for families to explore without being subject to hordes of tourists or the incessant clamor of what is. After all one of the most visited cities in the world – and one that has a vibrancy that makes it the envy of many others.
At the Marina and the waterfront, there is something for almost anyone. People visit in search of fishing opportunities, safe and secure playgrounds for the kids, access to wonderful dining spots, great nature trails and also some of the best sailing conditions to be found anywhere near San Francisco.
The Berkeley Marina is as much a part of life in the ‘Golden City’ as the world-famous bridge (which can be seen from the Marina). It is a place of fun and refuge from everyday concerns -it is one of those magical places where people can simply let their hair down and be themselves. One of the places that contribute to the feeling of relaxation is Cesar Chavez Park. Here, the opportunities for recreation abound. There are of course those wonderful views across the Bay – taking in the bridges, Alcatraz and Angel Island – as well as the glittering skyline of the city itself. The Park boasts some exceptional hiking and biking trails which are complemented by incredible views and the fabulous wildlife (including magnificent seabirds) that call the wetlands surrounding the Park home.
For those who want to take their furry companions on an outing, there are areas that have been set aside that will allow dogs to frolic without the constraints of a leash. Making then Park even more attractive for a family day out are the availability of picnic areas and BBQ facilities. That famous San Francisco wind often comes out to play – making this one of the best places to enjoy the simple pleasure of flying a kite. Those in search of the ‘Big One’ or perhaps even dinner will want to visit the Berkeley Marina Sport Fishing Center. There is also a sailing school and club in the Marina.
This is certainly a place for kids due to the Adventure Playground where the younger members of the family can climb and clamber to their heart’s content. Work tables and zip lines abound. This has been called one of the best adventure playgrounds in the U.S. and makes a visit to the Marina by families with young children an absolute necessity.
The Berkeley Marina is a magical place – in a magical city. It is a destination that both locals and visitors should take in during a leisurely visit. The views alone – and photographic opportunities make the trip worthwhile.
